AUDIENCE THEORY

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
This is the view that audiences take in information from the media that has the same effect on everyone.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

This is more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with the media they consume.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds
This assumes no individual difference in audience members
It was believed in 1930's that the media was this powerful.

4) Write down a media text for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: Learning information that you did not already know.

IDENTITY: Personally relating to something

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Escapism and being entertained away from your normal life

RELATIONSHIPS: Forming relationships with characters or celebrities so you're invested in what happens to them next, social interaction.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory - notes outlined above).

In the clip the audience gains information and entertainment. This means as they're watching this documentary, they receive information about what the narrator is teaching the consumers about and they are being entertained because the documentary allows them to feel escapism from their everyday life. Information being said throughout the documentary enables the consumers to understand the life of the ocean across the world and they interpret lots of new facts that to help the gain a stronger knowledge about the life in the ocean. Seeing other living beings gives a feeling of amazement as they're discovering the world below.
