1) What are the key conventions of music video?
Key conventions of music videos are
-movement
-many contain a performance element or narrative
-visual effects + intertextuality
2) What is intertextuality?
Intertextuality refers to the process of creating references to any kind of media text via another media text.
3) When did music videos first become a major part of the music industry?
When MTV was launched in 1981, music videos became a major part of the music industry as it was the first music channel on television.
4) What launched in 1981 and why were music videos an important part of the music industry in the 1980s and 1990s?
MTV
5) How are music videos distributed and watched in the digital age?
In 2005 youtube was launched and it changed they way consumers intake and enjoy music videos.
One Direction: Industry
1) How were One Direction formed and how is this reflected in the music video for History?
They are an English/Irish pop band formed by Simon Cowell during series 7 of hit show X Factor. In the 'History' music video this is shown by having flashbacks of when they first got told they'd be a group.
2) What is vertical integration? You may need to check your book for this (or remind yourself from this Year 1 blogpost.)
Vertical Integration is when a Media Company owns different businesses in the same chain of production and distribution.
3) What is horizontal integration? (See link above for help again!)
Horizontal integration is when one company buys other companies at the same level of distribution.
They started of as a boy band, within the period of time they were a group their friendships became stronger but it's time for them to separate and each head in new directions
5) As a manufactured band, what influence do Simon Cowell and the record company Syco (part of Sony) have over the content and release strategy of One Direction music videos?
Simon cowell was their coach on x factor and he in fact chose each of them to participate in a boy group. Simon then signed them, making them an even larger known group.
Audience
1) What is the main One Direction audience - demographics and psycho graphics?
The main Target Audience for one direction is young girls around the age of 10- late teens.
2) What audience pleasures are offered by the music video for History?
Diversion - through a feeling of Nostalgia
Personal Relationships - fans were used to contribute to the singles chorus
Personal Identity - with band members who were marketed as the 'funny one' or the 'handsome one' and also relating to other like minded fans (youth culture e.g selfies)
Surveillance - Insight into the behind the scenes
3) Pick out three particular shots, scenes or moments in the video that would particularly appeal to One Direction fans. Why did you choose those moments?
Toward the beginning there is a black and white shot of the boys filming their first hit star song "thats what makes you beautiful"
4) What is nostalgia and why is it a key audience pleasure for the History music video?
Nostalgia is a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period
5) How are fans positioned to respond to the video? What do the producers want One Direction fans to take from the video?
Fans are positioned to respond the video to feel upset at the fact that the group is splitting up and as they're heading in their own new directions therefore there wont be no more one direction music.
